The start to the 2006 season saw Beverley CC travel to newly promoted Stamford Bridge, a team widely seen as the league's relegation favourites.

After losing the toss, Beverley struggled on a worn pitch with a wicket lost off the second ball of the game; this continued steadily as wickets fell at regular intervals on a pitch showing variable bounce and seam movement. Stephenson was holding the innings together as he amassed 34 on his return to the side after a season long break.
